Which Singapore donburi chains and shops are halal or MUIS certified, with all 49 open halal outlets listed by area and a clear note on every listing that is not certified.

A Japanese rice bowl topped with chicken and egg

Most Japanese rice bowl shops in Singapore are not halal. A few are, and two of the biggest chains, Sukiya and Yoshinoya, are MUIS certified at every outlet according to their own sites. This guide lists all 49 open halal outlets in our directory by area, 29 Sukiya, 16 Yoshinoya and four independent shops, and says plainly which listings are not certified.

Certified, halal per the shop, and pork free

These three labels are not the same. A MUIS certified outlet holds a halal certificate from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, which covers the ingredients and how the kitchen is run. A shop that is halal per its own site makes the claim itself, and we repeat it with the source named so you can judge. A pork free listing only tells you that no pork is on the menu. It says nothing about where the meat comes from, how it is prepared, or whether the sauces contain alcohol.

We use the strictest label the evidence supports. Sukiya and Yoshinoya state on their own sites that their Singapore outlets are MUIS certified, so every open outlet of both chains is flagged halal in our directory. For the independent shops we name the source, and if you eat only certified food you should confirm the certificate at their counters. No open listing in our directory is flagged pork free without also being halal.

This matters more for donburi than it might seem. Many Japanese bowls are finished with a sweet soy tare, and some Japanese sauces and marinades use mirin or sake, which is one reason a pork free menu alone is not enough for many diners. It is also why the two big beef bowl chains are the easy answer: both chains say their Singapore outlets are certified, so you rarely have to quiz the staff about the kitchen.

Outlets by area

These are all 49 open outlets flagged halal in our directory: 29 Sukiya, 16 Yoshinoya and four independent shops. See the Sukiya chain page and the Yoshinoya chain page for each chain's menu and outlet list. Sukiya Hillion Mall is listed under Bukit Panjang.

Sukiya outlets are open late and the Changi Airport Terminal 2 outlet is open 24 hours, but hours differ by outlet, so check the shop page before you go. Last orders at Sukiya are 30 minutes before closing, and SethLui reports that the Marina Square outlet closes on 31 March 2027.

What you can order

At Sukiya the published menu has no pork bowls. The medium gyudon is $4.90, the melted cheese version is $7.50, the beef yakiniku bowl is $7.30 and the unagi bowl is $12.40, all with GST included. At Yoshinoya a regular gyudon is $6.50, the ontama and cheese versions are $8.00 and $8.50, and the unagi bowls run from $13.40 to $16.90. Both are strong on gyu don, and you can compare them in our chain comparison.

If you want something other than beef, Hatsumi has an oyakodon at $7.90, a grilled miso chicken don at $9.90 and a chicken katsu curry don at $10.90, and says it adds no service charge or GST. See our oyako don page for other chicken and egg bowls. Tokyo Shokudo at Tampines Mall serves a Signature Tendon at $18 with a choice of signature or spicy sauce, and a Gyu Don at $13.90. Oiishii Corner, a stall at Kim Keat Palm Market and Food Centre, lists a beef don at $6.50 and a chicken katsu curry don at $6.00, and is closed on Fridays. Gyunion, a weekday counter at Oxley Tower, has sources that disagree on the gyudon price, $7.90 in 2026 and $11.50 in November 2025, so ask before you order. For more bowls under $12, see our cheap donburi list.

Opening hours for the independent shops

The independent halal shops keep tighter hours than the chains. Hatsumi at Raffles Xchange is open Monday to Friday 10:30am to 8pm and Saturday 10:30am to 5pm, and closed on Sunday. Tokyo Shokudo on level 4 of Tampines Mall opens daily from 11:30am to 10pm. Oiishii Corner opens 11am to 6pm and is closed on Fridays. Gyunion is a weekday counter on level 2 of Oxley Tower, closed at weekends, with SethLui listing Monday to Wednesday 12pm to 6:30pm and Thursday and Friday 12pm to 8pm, although Eatbook gave slightly different hours in November 2025. Check before you travel, particularly for the two market stalls and the office district counters.

What is not certified

Every other listing on don.sg should be treated as not halal certified. That includes the chains most people think of for seafood and tempura. Kei Kaisendon is not halal, Unatoto serves pork and does not state halal status, Omote serves pork, and Ten Ten Otoko and MUKAI are both noted as not halal certified. Where a listing has no halal flag, it means we found no evidence of certification, not that it was checked and refused. You can browse kaisen don and tendon shops, but ask the staff about ingredients before you eat if halal matters to you.

How to check before you go

Sukiya and Yoshinoya certification is chain wide according to the chains' own sites, so you can order at any open outlet. Certification can still change when a lease ends or a shop moves, so for the independent shops, look for the MUIS certificate displayed at the counter, or ask the staff to show it. Our data was checked on 7 October 2026, and where a source was a food guide rather than the shop itself we have said so. If you find an outlet that has changed, tell us through the contact page.
