Yoshinoya traces its beginnings to 1899 at the Nihonbashi fish market in Tokyo, and the brand describes itself as the first and largest gyudon chain, with over 3,000 outlets worldwide. The Singapore arm started in 1997 with a small shop at Ngee Ann City. Its website lists 15 Singapore outlets, all Halal certified by MUIS. The core bowl is sliced beef simmered in a herb and spice broth with sweet onions on rice, with kimchi, cheese and egg variations, plus unagi bowls. A regular gyudon is a little over six dollars.
